Holden State Police Barracks
Just wanted to let y'all know there is once again a State Police Officer at the Holden Barracks who is certified to install car seats. There is also now an officer in Rutland. My Mom said the officer in Shrewsbury was very good and I can highly recommend Officer Majer in Upton. I hope everyone is having a great summer!

I saw something yesterday that still has me feeling uneasy. As I left the Price Chopper on W. Mountain Street in Worcester I was sitting in my van w/my daughter, we were playing in the car seat before I loaded up the groceries, when I heard a man screaming at the top of his lungs. He was a vey muscular, bald man who was violently loading his child into the car seat and screaming at the baby to shut up. I've never seen or heard anything like it. I had a moment of indecision. My first instinct was to walk over to the man (his van was right in front of mine) and offer to help. But I had no idea how he was going to react and I thought "What if he goes after my daughter?". So I watched to see if he calmed down. He did not. He continued to scream at the child as he walked to his door and then slammed it shut. I could still hear him screaming with all the doors closed. I never once heard the child make a sound.

Once he pulled out of the space I dialed the Holden Police Dept and asked if I should report it, they said yes and gave me the number for the Worcester PD. So I called with the make, model and license plate number and watched to see which way the man went. They said they'd "Be on the look-out for him" I even called the store to make sure no one had reported a lost child. I've been thinking of that poor child all day and hoping that the man didn't take out his violent temper on the baby. And also wondering if I did the right thing. SHould I have gotten out and offered to help? Maybe the sudden realization that he was being out of control would have given him a moment to count to 10 and relax. I dunno... I just really hope that child is OK. More importantly, I hope that I don't ever lose my temper like that at or in front of my children.

I guess we never really know if we do the right thing. We just hope it all works out in the end.

Marcus and Sleeping
I think we may have created a situation with Marcus

The past couple of weeks have been rather strange when it comes to his sleeping habits. It may have started sometime around the point when we were giving him cold medicine (just Tylenol/pseudoehpedrine combination) to help him with his cold.
We'll give him his night bottle around 9pm, give or take a few minutes, having given him the cold medicine. He'll suck down the formula, and fight off sleep. He'll shift positions, etc, trying to get comfortable. Most often than not, it will take Colleen coming in and snuggling up with him and he'll nod out. We let him cook for 10-15 minutes, then move him to the crib. Most often than not, this will be between 10 and 11pm.
So, anywhere between (at least by my observations) 11pm and 4am, he will wake up at some point, and just start crying. I get up, and see if he has his pacifier in his mouth. If he doesn't I put it in and try to lay him down (since putting that in has acted like a switch in the recent past -- put it in and he'll collapse like a house of cards. If he does, well, there's a problem. I change him and bring him into the bed with us, where he'll nod out after a little while.
And he usually stays with us until morning.
Now, speaking as new parents, I do have to say that this is getting old.
The past couple of nights, we tried just straight Tylenol, since he's teething. Nope, still woke up, and in bed with us.
Last night, straight Tylenol again, but this time I had an idea. I cleared off the futon that's in his room (in couch mode... this is also the "family guest" bed), lay down on it and had him settle on my chest. He loves happing that way. He tossed a couple of times but soon fell into a relaxing nap. I had to get up for the loo after a while, so I put him in his crib, making sure he was still asleep. After a minute, he was up and crying again, so back in bed with us.

We're sort of at a loss as to what to do here. I'm approaching the point where I think that maybe a half-hit of Benadryl will help him right now. There's a slight chance he may become hyper with it though, but he hasn't exhibited that kind of behaviour with it before.
While we want him to be able to sleep all night in his crib, we also don't want him up all night crying his head off.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anecdotes? Helpful stories?

Car Seat Installations
Sgt. Sue Anderson, formerly of the Holden State Police Barracks, has moved to Sturbridge. That means the Holden Barracks no longer do car seat installations. My babe is ready for her seat to be moved to the front facing position so I'll be searching for someone in the Worcester area who is certified. When I'm able to locate someone, I'll post it here.

Pregnancy info
Blue Cross Blue Shield has a great site for information when you're pregant. It has the usual pregnancy calendar, but it also has a lot of general pregnancy/women's health issues. Not that my daughter is born, I use the Baby Health pages constantly as they have some really good child development and wellness information.

State Police Car Seat Installations/Inspections
Many of you probably already know this, but the State Police will install your car seat for free. It's quick and easy to do. You can just call the Holden Barracks and ask for Sgt. Anderson. She's wonderful!! Given the statistics on improperly installed seats, I highly recommend everyone at least get the installation inspected. If nothing else, they'll tell you that you did a wonderful job and you can leave with a sense of peace.

Greetings to the small list here. Hopefully it will grow.
A good number of you know us already, but I'll still make the usual entrance.

My name is Adam, though on here most know me as pfloyd.
Colleen is my wife, aka silvara77.
On 5 May 2005, after an ordeal that shook the foundations of quite a few people (those who don't know the story can ask, I will retell it here), we welcomed the arrival of Marcus, the cute cub you see in the icon here.
To quote The Who, he's a real good lookin' boy. We love it when he smiles at us.
We just can't believe he'll be ten weeks old this coming Friday. It's almost like we can't think of a time when he wasn't around. That's how much of an impact he's made with us.

Well, enough gushing and all that for now.

Things to do
Anyone know of any fun things to do with an infant? I've been looking for a Mommy and Me in Holden, but I must be blind because I haven't found anything. There is a reading group at the library, but it always falls during her nap time, and we all know how important naps are...
